Captions

Turns a verbatim transcript into clean, readable burned-in subtitles with strict line, timing and cleanup rules, ready for DaVinci Resolve import.

Image & VideoIntermediate★ 379⑂ 54AI score 9/10Last updated: Oct 23, 2026

What it does

  • Strips stutters, filler sounds, cut-off words and self-corrections so captions show what was meant, correctly written.
  • Maps spoken short forms to proper written forms (Brazilian Portuguese examples included) while preserving idioms and swear words — fixing grammar, not voice.
  • Enforces measurable formatting: max 42 characters per line, new cue at pauses ≥0.6 s or after 3.2 s, minimum 0.9 s on screen, 0.25 s tail after the last word, no overlaps.
  • Starts the first cue at 00:00:00,000 so Resolve's import doesn't shift the whole track.
  • Verifies product and personal names on the web; keeps global replacement rules in config and per-video fixes in caption_fixes.json.
  • Requires a read-through pass over every cue, grepping for leftover short forms, double punctuation and lowercase after full stops.

Who it's for

  • Creators and editors cutting YouTube/Reels/Shorts in DaVinci Resolve
  • Anyone who needs high-quality burned-in captions for mute viewers
  • Teams repeatedly turning Whisper-style transcripts into subtitle files

Example uses

  1. "Make captions from this transcript" → a cleaned captions_v1.srt respecting the 42-character limit.
  2. "The product name is wrong in the captions" → the spelling is checked online, added to caption_fixes.json, and the file is regenerated.
  3. "Convert the spoken contractions to written form" → word map applied first, phrase fixes after, output saved as a new versioned file.

Install the skill I found on AI Skill Mart.
Copy the skills/captions folder from the GitHub repo appariciojunior/video-editor-skills into my ~/.claude/skills/appariciojunior-captions/.
When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.

Install with a command instead

git clone https://github.com/appariciojunior/video-editor-skills.git && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r video-editor-skills/skills/captions ~/.claude/skills/

⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/appariciojunior/video-editor-skills.git
  3. Create the skills folder: mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
  4. Copy this skill: cp -r video-editor-skills/skills/captions ~/.claude/skills/
  5. Optional: also copy the sibling motion-overlays skill if you use overlays that must avoid the caption band.
  6. Restart Claude Code, then hand it your transcript and ask for "captions for this timeline".
  7. Import the generated .srt in DaVinci Resolve via File > Import > Subtitle — delete old subtitle clips but keep the track so your style is preserved.
