What it does
- Calls the SEC EDGAR companyfacts XBRL API directly to read the numbers a company actually tagged in its 10-Qs and 10-Ks.
- Lines up revenue, gross/operating/net margins, net income and diluted EPS quarter by quarter, each against the same quarter a year earlier, plus trailing-twelve-month totals.
- Locates the newest earnings 8-K (item 2.02) and its press release exhibit (EX-99.1).
- Writes
trader/metrics.jsonso the companion/trader-screenerskill can consume it. - Marks the derived Q4 (10-K year minus three quarters) as approximate, prints a NOTE when the facts API lags the newest 10-Q, blanks gross margin for banks and insurers, and flags when net income exceeds operating income (one-off gains).
Who it's for
- Investors who want filed numbers, not press-release headlines, during earnings season.
- Analysts and developers automating financial data pipelines or research notes.
- Anyone who wants filing data with standard-library Python and no paid data API.
Examples
- "How did Apple's earnings look?" → runs
facts.py AAPLand summarises revenue, EPS, growth, margins with the press-release link. - "Run the analyst on my holdings" →
facts.py AAPL AXP GOOGL KO BAC --metrics trader/metrics.jsonbuilds the screener input file. - "Compare Coca-Cola's margins" → when SEC facts trail the filed 10-Q, the tool prints a NOTE and the summary reads that 10-Q directly.
Note: education and tooling, not financial advice. It never calls a stock a buy or sell and never places an order.

Install the skill I found on AI Skill Mart. Copy the trader-analyst folder from the GitHub repo Jakeschincariol/trader-skill into my ~/.claude/skills/jakeschincariol-trader-analyst/. When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.
Install with a command instead
git clone https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/trader-skill.git && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r trader-skill/trader-analyst ~/.claude/skills/⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.
- Open a terminal.
- Clone the repo:
git clone https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/trader-skill.git - Copy the skill into Claude Code:
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r trader-skill/trader-analyst ~/.claude/skills/ - Confirm Python 3 is available:
python3 --version(no extra packages required). - Set the required SEC User-Agent:
export SEC_USER_AGENT="Your Name you@example.com"with your real name and email, or add"sec_user_agent"totrader/config.json. The tool refuses to contact SEC without it. - Restart Claude Code and ask something like "analyze Apple's earnings" to trigger the skill.
- Smoke test:
python3 ~/.claude/skills/trader-analyst/facts.py AAPL
