YouTube Captions Extractor

Pulls timestamped closed captions from any public YouTube video and exports them as text, SRT, or VTT.

Image & VideoBeginner★ 343⑂ 22AI score 9/10Last updated: Oct 15, 2026

What it does

  • Fetches closed captions from public YouTube videos through the TranscriptOut API.
  • Returns json (with timestamps), text, srt, vtt, or srv3; download=true hands back the raw subtitle file.
  • Lets you pick track language (lang), manual vs auto captions (kind), and segment length; video_metadata=true adds title, channel, duration and views for the same single credit.
  • Documents the JSON response envelope and an action per error code (401 key, 402 credits, 404 no captions, 429 rate limit, 502 upstream).

Who it's for

  • Anyone who would rather read and summarize a video than watch it.
  • Creators and researchers quoting or translating spoken content.
  • Accessibility work for deaf/HoH audiences, and language learners.
  • Editors who need SRT/VTT subtitle files for publishing.

Examples

  1. "Summarize this conference talk" → grab format=text and summarize directly.
  2. "Save the German subtitles of this video as an .srt" → lang=de&format=srt&download=true.
  3. "What was said around 3:30?" → use format=json and look up the timestamped segments.

Install the skill I found on AI Skill Mart.
Copy the clawhub/captions folder from the GitHub repo artemchuikin/youtube-skills into my ~/.claude/skills/captions/.
When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.

Install with a command instead

git clone https://github.com/artemchuikin/youtube-skills.git && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r youtube-skills/clawhub/captions ~/.claude/skills/captions

⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.

  1. Clone the repo: git clone https://github.com/artemchuikin/youtube-skills.git
  2. Copy the skill into your Claude skills folder: mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r youtube-skills/clawhub/captions ~/.claude/skills/captions
  3. Create a free account at https://transcriptout.com (100 credits on signup, no card) and generate an API key in the dashboard — it starts with sk_.
  4. Export the key: export TRANSCRIPTOUT_API_KEY=sk_... (add it to ~/.zshrc or ~/.bashrc to persist it).
  5. Restart Claude Code and try: "Get the captions for this YouTube video: <link>".
  6. Remember it needs internet access to api.transcriptout.com and spends 1 credit per transcript call.
