Trader Budget Manager

Turns a trade plan (entry, stop, target) into an exact whole-share bracket order that fits your budget and your max loss per trade.

UtilitiesIntermediate★ 4,921⑂ 1,179AI score 8/10Last updated: Oct 20, 2026

What it does

  • Reads trader/plan.json (entry, stop, target) and trader/config.json (budget, cash buffer, max loss per trade) and computes how many whole shares to buy.
  • Takes the smallest of four caps — max loss per trade, position cap, max order size, and cash after your buffer — and tells you which cap decided the size.
  • Writes exactly one bracket order (entry + stop-loss + take-profit) to trader/orders.json in Alpaca's place_stock_order shape. It never places anything.
  • If the stop is so far away that even one share breaks your max loss, it refuses rather than quietly shrinking the order. It also refuses on weak reward:risk, stale/other-day plans, blocked tickers, and shorts.
  • Includes a weights mode (--weights, --targets) to split a budget across several tickers with cap and minimum-order handling.

Who it's for

  • Alpaca users (especially on paper accounts) who want rules-based sizing.
  • Traders who want position size driven by a hard number ("$50 max loss") instead of gut feel.
  • Anyone already using the companion trader-exit / trader-risk / trader-broker skills.

Examples

  1. "I have $5,000 and only want to risk $50 a trade" → it creates the config and walks you through each setting.
  2. TSLA entry 364.18 / stop 358.32 / target 370.04 → $5.86 risk per share, max-loss cap binds → 8 shares, $2,913.44, $46.88 max loss at the stop.
  3. Price has run to 366.48 since the plan → only 6 shares and reward:risk drops to 0.44 → order refused, the move already happened.

Install the skill I found on AI Skill Mart.
Copy the trader-budget folder from the GitHub repo Jakeschincariol/day-trader-skill into my ~/.claude/skills/trader-budget/.
When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.

Install with a command instead

git clone https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/day-trader-skill.git /tmp/day-trader-skill && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r /tmp/day-trader-skill/trader-budget ~/.claude/skills/

⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Clone the repo: git clone https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/day-trader-skill.git
  3. Create the skills folder: mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
  4. Copy the skill: cp -r day-trader-skill/trader-budget ~/.claude/skills/ (also copy trader-exit, trader-risk and trader-broker for the full workflow).
  5. Confirm Python is available: python3 --version.
  6. Restart Claude Code and ask "size this trade" or run /trader-budget 5000.
  7. On first run, create trader/config.json from config.example.json and fill in budget, cash buffer and max loss. Keep "paper": true and validate on a paper account before anything else.
