YouTube Subtitle Fetcher

Pull YouTube video subtitles as timed JSON, plain text, or ready-to-use SRT/VTT files.

Image & VideoIntermediate★ 344⑂ 23AI score 9/10Last updated: Oct 15, 2026

What it does

Calls the TranscriptOut API to retrieve subtitles for any YouTube video.

  • Accepts a full/short/Shorts URL or an 11-character video ID
  • Output formats: json (with timestamps), text, srt, vtt, srv3
  • Pick the track language (lang) and manual vs auto-generated captions (kind)
  • video_metadata=true bundles title, channel, duration and views into the same 1-credit call
  • download=true returns the bare .srt/.vtt file ready for an editor
  • Documents every error code with retry/refund guidance and rate limits

Who it's for

  • Anyone following or translating foreign-language talks and tutorials
  • Content creators repurposing video into articles and summaries
  • Video editors needing caption files, and language learners reading along

Examples

  1. "Export this German lecture as SRT and translate it" → call with lang=de&format=srt, then translate
  2. "Summarize this video" → format=text&video_metadata=true gets the title plus full transcript for one credit
  3. "I need to quote a specific moment" → format=json returns timestamped segments for precise citations

Install the skill I found on AI Skill Mart.
Copy the clawhub/subtitles folder from the GitHub repo artemchuikin/youtube-skills into my ~/.claude/skills/subtitles/.
When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.

Install with a command instead

git clone https://github.com/artemchuikin/youtube-skills.git && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r youtube-skills/clawhub/subtitles ~/.claude/skills/

⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.

  1. Clone the repo: git clone https://github.com/artemchuikin/youtube-skills.git
  2. Copy the skill into place: mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r youtube-skills/clawhub/subtitles ~/.claude/skills/
  3. Create a free account at https://transcriptout.com (100 credits on signup, no card) and generate an API key starting with sk_.
  4. Export the key: export TRANSCRIPTOUT_API_KEY=sk_... — add it to ~/.zshrc or ~/.bashrc to persist.
  5. Restart Claude Code and try: "Get the subtitles for this YouTube video."
  6. Troubleshooting: a 401 means the key is wrong or missing; a 402 means you are out of credits.
