Setup Benny (Slack bug triage & repro automation)

Installs and configures the Benny automation pack so Cursor can triage Slack bug reports, reproduce them through the real UI, and open draft PRs.

AutomationAdvanced★ 3,273⑂ 234AI score 8/10Last updated: Oct 28, 2026

What it does

  • Merges the dormant Benny pack from pstack into <repo>/.cursor/automations/benny/ and enables the pstack plugin in .cursor/settings.json without clobbering existing settings.
  • Creates user-owned copies of the configuration, feature map, and routing map outside the pack, then collects every required value: Slack source channel, triage identity, repo + default branch, tracker type/team/labels, status emoji, PR URL format, polling and effort budgets, and model slugs.
  • Audits integration capabilities (Slack thread read/reply, attachment downloads, tracker CRUD, draft PR action) and validates that the control adapter can launch the app, drive mapped features, screenshot, and record.
  • Drives Cursor's built-in automate skill to create benny-triage and benny-reproduce one at a time, pointing each live prompt at its committed operational SKILL.md by stable repo-relative path.
  • Blocks enabling anything until a seven-point thread-safety test passes (thread-only replies, trusted markers, immutable coordinates, no writes from delegated workers).

Who it's for

  • Teams already running Cursor Automations with a Slack bug-report channel.
  • Engineering leads wiring Slack threads to Linear/Jira with automatic dedupe.
  • Quality owners who want a fail-closed pipeline: no reproduction, no fix PR.

Examples

  1. First install: point the agent at the SKILL.md → pack copied → shared pstack skills verified → config filled → benny-triage created, then benny-reproduce.
  2. Changing the Slack channel: for existing automations the skill refuses to use automate and instead hands you an editor checklist so no duplicates are created.
  3. Missing control adapter: if screenshots or recording are unavailable, the repro automation stays disabled with a clear explanation.

Install the skill I found on AI Skill Mart.
Copy the automations/benny/skills/setup-benny folder from the GitHub repo backnotprop/pstack into my ~/.claude/skills/setup-benny/.
When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.

Install with a command instead

git clone https://github.com/backnotprop/pstack.git /tmp/pstack && mkdir -p .cursor/automations && cp -r /tmp/pstack/automations/benny .cursor/automations/benny

⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.

  1. Open a terminal in the root of the repository that will run the automations.
  2. Run git clone https://github.com/backnotprop/pstack.git /tmp/pstack.
  3. Run mkdir -p .cursor/automations && cp -r /tmp/pstack/automations/benny .cursor/automations/benny.
  4. Edit .cursor/settings.json and merge in {"plugins": {"pstack": {"enabled": true}}}, keeping all other settings and plugins intact (create the file if missing).
  5. Reload the project in Cursor, then ask a fresh agent to read and follow .cursor/automations/benny/skills/setup-benny/SKILL.md.
  6. Answer the configuration questions (Slack channel ID, repo URL, tracker, model slugs) and keep your config/feature-map files outside the pack, e.g. in .cursor/benny/.
  7. Store any token such as BENNY_SLACK_BOT_TOKEN in a secret manager or environment variable — never in YAML or committed files.
  8. Commit the pack and secret-free config, run the test-channel trial, and only enable live traffic after all seven thread-safety checks pass.
