  • Enforces a search-first workflow: trace_search for symbols, trace_get_symbol for exact definitions, trace_get_outline for file structure — instead of reading whole files.
  • Checks trace_get_index_health before querying.
  • Recalls prior design decisions via trace_get_project_memo and trace_query_decisions, and records new ones with trace_remember_decision (auto-capture is English-only; use the panel or bb trace remember otherwise).

  5. Verify prerequisites: a bb thread bound to an environment with a repository path, plus the trace-mcp server/plugin running.
  6. Restart Claude Code and run bb trace status to confirm index health. The first index build may take a while.
