Trader Price Alerts (trader-alerts)
Watches your tickers and rings once when a target, stop, percent move, or the NYSE opening bell hits.

What it does
- Registers and monitors alert rules: above, below/stop, percent move from the previous close, and the NYSE opening bell.
- Fetches free delayed quotes (Yahoo chart JSON, Stooq CSV) one ticker at a time and writes
trader/prices.jsonso sibling skills (budget, risk, tax, rebalance) share the same prices. - Ships an NYSE clock: 9:30–16:00 New York, weekends, 2026–2027 holidays, 1:00 p.m. early closes, DST handled in code.
- Tracks fired state in
trader/state/alerts.jsonso each rule rings once (with optionalrearm). - Never places, cancels or changes an order and never claims quotes are real time.
Who it's for
- Retail investors who want stops and price targets watched automatically.
- Anyone tired of looking up whether the US market is open today.
- Users of the wider trader-* skill pack who need one shared price file.
- People comfortable running a python3 script and a cron/scheduled task.
Examples
- "Tell me if Apple drops under $320" →
add --symbol AAPL --below 320, thencheckevery 15 minutes during market hours. - "Set a stop on BAC at 50" →
add --symbol BAC --stop 50 --note "my stop"; it rings once and reports in a single line. - "Is the market open?" →
alerts.py clockprints open/closed plus the next open.

Install in Claude Code
Let Claude do it — paste this into Claude Code
Install the skill I found on AI Skill Mart. Copy the trader-alerts folder from the GitHub repo Jakeschincariol/trader-skill into my ~/.claude/skills/jakeschincariol-trader-alerts/. When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.
Install with a command instead
git clone https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/trader-skill.git /tmp/trader-skill && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r /tmp/trader-skill/trader-alerts ~/.claude/skills/⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.
- Open a terminal and confirm Python 3 is available:
python3 --version. - Clone the repo:
git clone https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/trader-skill.git - Copy the skill into place:
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r trader-skill/trader-alerts ~/.claude/skills/ - In your working folder create a
trader/directory and copyalerts.example.jsontotrader/alerts.jsonas a starting ruleset. - Restart Claude Code and try "is the market open?" or "alert me when AAPL hits 350".
- For continuous monitoring, schedule
alerts.py checkevery 15 minutes during market hours via cron or a Claude scheduled task. - If you connect a broker, keep API keys in environment variables or the Claude Desktop config — never paste them into chat, and leave order tools set to "Needs approval".
