OpenSpec Change Proposer

Creates an openspec change and generates proposal, design and task artifacts in dependency order from a single request.

Dev & CodingIntermediate★ 963⑂ 2AI score 7/10Last updated: Oct 30, 2026

What it does

  • Derives a kebab-case change name from your description and scaffolds it with openspec new change.
  • Reads openspec status --json to learn which artifacts are required before implementation and in what order.
  • Follows the template, context and rules returned by openspec instructions to write proposal.md (what & why), design.md (how) and tasks.md (implementation steps).
  • Tracks progress with TodoWrite, re-checks status after each artifact, and asks clarifying questions only when context is critically unclear.
  • Ends with a summary of created files and a prompt to run /opsx:apply.

Who it's for

  • Teams practicing spec-driven development with OpenSpec
  • Developers tired of hand-writing proposal, design and task documents
  • Anyone who wants consistent, template-conformant change documentation before coding

Examples

  1. "Add user authentication" → change add-user-auth scaffolded with all three artifacts written.
  2. Pass only a change name such as fix-rate-limit and let the skill fill in the documents.
  3. If a change with the same name exists, the skill asks whether to continue it or start fresh.

Install the skill I found on AI Skill Mart.
Copy the .agents/skills/openspec-propose folder from the GitHub repo Gitruck/cli into my ~/.claude/skills/gitruck-openspec-propose/.
When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.

Install with a command instead

git clone https://github.com/Gitruck/cli.git /tmp/openspec-cli && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r /tmp/openspec-cli/.agents/skills/openspec-propose ~/.claude/skills/

⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.

  1. Install the openspec CLI first and verify it with openspec --version — the skill cannot work without it.
  2. Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/Gitruck/cli.git /tmp/openspec-cli
  3. Copy the skill into Claude Code: mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r /tmp/openspec-cli/.agents/skills/openspec-propose ~/.claude/skills/
  4. Restart Claude Code and confirm ~/.claude/skills/openspec-propose/SKILL.md exists.
  5. From a project root containing an openspec/ directory, ask "propose a new change" to trigger the skill.
