Founder Competitor Analysis (founder-competitors)

Maps direct, indirect and substitute competitors from public sources only — prices, positioning, customer complaints, every fact linked — and ends with the gap you can own.

Marketing & SEOBeginner★ 237⑂ 22AI score 9/10Last updated: Oct 7, 2026

What it does

  • Reads your founder/idea.md and finds 5–10 direct and indirect competitors plus the main substitutes (how buyers solve the problem without paying anyone).
  • Logs one row per competitor in founder/competitors.csv: name, type, url, location/channel, price of a comparable item, what it sells, their own positioning line, rating, review count, source date.
  • For the top 3–5, reads real reviews (1–3 stars first, then the "love it, but..." 4 stars) and groups recurring complaints into themes with counts and linked verbatim quotes; themes with under three reviews are flagged as thin.
  • Writes founder/competitors.md with the sorted table, price low/median/high, a two-axis positioning map in text, ranked complaints, the gap nobody serves well, and who could copy you fastest.
  • Strict research rules: public sources only, every fact linked, say so when a source is unreachable, never invent a competitor, price, rating or review, quotes verbatim and never used as testimonials.

Who it's for

  • Solo founders and side-project builders validating an idea
  • Anyone opening a local shop, café or service who needs the neighbourhood landscape
  • PMs and marketers setting positioning and a price band against alternatives

Examples

  1. "Who are my competitors for a matcha café in Brooklyn?" → walkable matcha bars (direct), coffee shops on the same street (indirect), home matcha powder and canned drinks (substitute), with prices and complaint themes.
  2. "Is this market crowded?" → answers from competitor count, median price and recurring complaints — and plainly says if there is no gap.
  3. "Find the gap for a freelancer invoicing app" → searches the way a buyer would ("<thing> alternative"), builds the CSV and positioning map, then hands the price range to /founder-pricing.

Install with a command instead

git clone https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/founder-skill.git && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r founder-skill/skills/founder-competitors ~/.claude/skills/

⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.

  1. Open your terminal.
  2. Clone the repo: git clone https://github.com/Jakeschincariol/founder-skill.git
  3. Create the skills directory: mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills

  5. Start Claude Code in your project folder and create founder/idea.md first (use /founder-board step 0 if you don't have one).
  6. Make sure web search / page-fetching tools are enabled — the skill relies on public sources.
  7. Ask something like "competitor analysis for [city or market]". Outputs land in founder/competitors.csv and founder/competitors.md.
