Code Understand — On-Demand Architecture Focus Map

Builds a ranked, citation-backed map of the files and symbols a codebase actually hangs on, so you read only what matters.

Dev & CodingIntermediate★ 3,520⑂ 350AI score 8/10Last updated: Oct 3, 2026

What it does

  • Produces a ranked focus map of load-bearing files and symbols in a project.
  • Every entry carries a file:line citation plus an evidence type (defines / imports / changed-file / rg text match) so you know how much to trust it.
  • Uses CodeGraph for real call-graph edges when installed; otherwise falls back to a zero-dependency regex symbol extractor plus rg cross-file references.
  • With --changed or --since <sha>, it maps the blast radius of a diff you're about to make.
  • Includes guardrails: treat output as a disposable cache, never commit raw JSON or .codegraph/, and fall back to normal grep/read if the command fails.

Who it's for

  • Developers dropped into a large, unfamiliar repository.
  • Anyone planning a big refactor who wants a ranked risk list instead of reading the whole tree.
  • Engineers who want PR descriptions grounded in real file:line pointers.
  • Teams already using (or willing to install) the obsidian-wiki CLI.

Example uses

  1. "Map out this project's architecture" → obsidian-wiki code-understand --project . --pretty, then open only the cited locations.
  2. Pre-refactor check → obsidian-wiki code-understand --since HEAD~5 to see what the recent changes touch.
  3. "Who calls this function?" → --changed src/auth/session.ts to seed from one file and get related symbols only.

Install the skill I found on Claude Skill Mart.
Copy the .skills/code-understand folder from the GitHub repo Ar9av/obsidian-wiki into my ~/.claude/skills/code-understand/.
When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.

Install with a command instead

git clone https://github.com/Ar9av/obsidian-wiki.git /tmp/obsidian-wiki && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r /tmp/obsidian-wiki/.skills/code-understand ~/.claude/skills/

⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.

  1. Open a terminal and clone the repo: git clone https://github.com/Ar9av/obsidian-wiki.git
  2. Create the skills directory: mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
  3. Copy the skill in: cp -r obsidian-wiki/.skills/code-understand ~/.claude/skills/
  4. Install the obsidian-wiki CLI per the repo's instructions — without it, Claude will simply fall back to ordinary grep/read exploration.
  5. (Optional) For richer call-graph evidence: npm install -g @colbymchenry/codegraph. Only install with your own explicit approval.
  6. Verify with obsidian-wiki doctor --project . and check the code-understanding.* capability lines.
  7. Restart Claude Code and try: "help me understand this codebase".
