B-roll Cutting Guide

A vlog-editing skill that finds silent B-roll clips, makes you actually watch them, and cuts them to the length the action demands.

Image & VideoIntermediate★ 357⑂ 50AI score 8/10Last updated: Oct 23, 2026

What it does

  • Identifies B-roll that transcript-only edits silently delete: clips with zero words, plus clips whose "speech" is really song lyrics or a foreign-language radio in a café.
  • Forces you to watch each clip via a contact sheet at 2 frames per second (8 per row) and check where the action starts and resolves, which part is steady vs. soft-focus, and whether the shot is vertical (it will crop in a horizontal frame).
  • Cuts by action, not fixed length: quick cutaway 2–4 s, transition sequence 6–8 s, drive outro 10–15 s, shortest slot for soft-focus shots.
  • Handles audio quirks: a truly silent clip normalized up to +30 dB gets pushed back to 0 dB; a clip with radio/music fighting the music bed drops about 8 dB.
  • Colours B-roll green on the timeline and reports each pick with timeline position, content, why that range, and flags.

Who it's for

  • Vloggers and YouTubers mixing talking heads (A-roll) with silent coverage
  • Anyone burned by auto-editors that strip every silent segment and wreck the pacing
  • Editors who keep hearing "the B-roll rhythm feels off"

Examples

  1. Hand it travel footage and ask for a B-roll pass — you get a JSON list of clips with in/out seconds and a reason for each range.
  2. It spots that one clip goes into a backpack (frames go black) and the next starts black coming out onto an airport table, then cuts black-to-black for a free, perfect transition.
  3. A café clip with only radio music was being treated as dialogue; the skill reclassifies it as B-roll and lowers it ~8 dB so it sits under the music bed.

Install the skill I found on AI Skill Mart.
Copy the skills/broll folder from the GitHub repo appariciojunior/video-editor-skills into my ~/.claude/skills/broll/.
When it's done, tell me in one line what this skill can do.

Install with a command instead

git clone https://github.com/appariciojunior/video-editor-skills.git /tmp/video-editor-skills && mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills && cp -r /tmp/video-editor-skills/skills/broll ~/.claude/skills/

⚠ This is a third-party skill. Check the source repository before installing.

  1. Open your terminal.
  2. Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/appariciojunior/video-editor-skills.git
  3. Create the skills folder if needed: mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
  4. Copy the skill in: cp -r video-editor-skills/skills/broll ~/.claude/skills/
  5. Also copy the referenced companion skill if present: cp -r video-editor-skills/skills/music-and-sound ~/.claude/skills/
  6. Restart Claude Code, then with your footage and transcript ready say: "Find and cut the B-roll for this vlog."
  7. Frame extraction is required, so verify ffmpeg is installed with ffmpeg -version.
